MY BACKGROUND AND SERVICES
Ms Alexi Ash BSc (Hons) ACIEEM Dip GD is a gender-fluid professional garden designer based in Sussex. She has worked independently in clients gardens from the age of 14, where she gained many skills.
Having taken A' levels in fine Art and History of Art, Design and Architecture she went on to achieve a BSc (Hons) in Environmental sciences with the University of Leicester. Following this she spent 8 months working in the Botanical gardens and producing watercolours of Etnean wildlife at the university of Catania, Sicily.
18 years ago, at the age of 25 she set up a gardening and hard landscape business which is still running today, with many clients regarded as regulars and friends. As well as a perfectionist, artistic eye for detail, She has an enviable knowledge of materials, budgeting and construction techniques and has constructed gardens and built all manner of garden structures, including undertaking civil engineering projects. She has worked for various designers and the architect Leslie T Bain. Alongside this, she has trained in Ecological consultancy and is a specialist in Terrestrial and aquatic Habitat construction and management. She also specialised in Wildlife ponds, Birds, Dormice and Herpetofauna. Now she chooses to focus on design and is currently working on a Diploma in Garden Design to further her career.
Im a very approachable, friendly, well presented, pleasant person and being Transgender, I prefer my clients to use neutral or female pronouns.
Having tastefully renovated three houses and gardens of my own, i have developed skills for producing a quality finish on a budget, wherever possible. However, i also believe in not skimping on materials choice or construction methods in key areas, because this is what sets a garden apart. I Like to combine beauty with practicality and for me even a wall is a chance to create a thing of beauty, choosing the best bricks, brick bonding patterns and style of capping.
I enjoy making new structures look period and choosing materials which replicate this. For me, clutter and bitty, busy areas are to be replaced with bold, simple, strong, clear lines and structure. Its essential the garden structure compliments the house in both style and materials selection and planting should be both an extension and a way of enhancing this further. I believe that, when a garden is tastefully laid out, and looking beautiful, it will create wellbeing within oneself, through the joy it brings. I never cease to be amazed by the amount of clients who will happily spend well over £5000 on a garden and yet still are unwilling to pay a several hundred pounds for a really great design plan.
